Why do women insist on ignoring differences between men? For instance, that women are better at number crunching and calculations, but men are better at word problems? Do some women actually believe men and women to be the same?

"Men" are not better than "women" (or vice versa) at anything. Your verbiage implies that ALL men are better than ALL women (or vice versa) at the given task. There's a bigger difference between Robert Frost and Ben Bernanke than there is between Frost and Maya Anjelou. SOME men do words better than SOME women and vice versa. It's a matter of INDIVIDUAL talents, not gender.

"Feminism" doesn't deny the differences between men and women. What we DO deny is that having a certain genitalia endows one with automatic superiority.

Without sounding like an a-hole, I'd say that there are a lot of women that don't want to acknowledge that they are the 'weaker sex'. Men are better at just about every physical act. Men have larger brains (on average 200cc bigger), a larger surface area on the brain (which means a greater thinking capacity). Men are faster physically and mentally.
The only thing that women are better than men at are abstract thinking like art.

Because a lot of those gender differences are cultural and social rather than biological, and these assumptions often have unfortunate implications. Everyone assigns value to abilities and characteristics whether they know it or not. So while it sounds innocent enough to say that women are better at crunching numbers and men better at word problems, in the real world that could turn into the assumption that women are better at uncomplicated, menial tasks that only require simple arithmetic, while men are more rational, best suited to lead or manage.

There does seem to be some evidence from evolutionary biology which reinforces old stereotypes--for example, men tend to have a tighter grasp on spatial relations and perspective, while women focus on the details. The trouble comes when thos

Men and women are different, of course! Feminism is not about ignoring those differences or pretending they don't exist, it's about getting the word out that a gender's attributes doesn't make them superior to another gender. That goes for men over women or women or men. It also goes outside of gender to sex, race, class, religion, etc.
