Subject: Old White Guy's Answer To Road Rage
Reply: read original | add to Watch List | reply
I'm glad to see that you at least admit that you are part of the problem of road rage. Admission is the first step to recovery. Driving takes all of a person's attention, or at least it should. However, everybody goofs up once in a while. I have had people cut me off, too. I have also cut people off before, and so have you -- haven't ya? Eveybody makes mistakes. There is no reason to go ballistic over things like that. I take it in stride and go on with my life. Why tailgate a person or pull up alongside and MF them? A person who does that is only making an A-hole out of themselves and deliberately creating a traffic hazard. And why would anybody follow someone to where they are going? What are they intending to do when they get to the destination? Pretty scary scenario, isn't it? You sound like a real scary, aggressive person to me, C. I am one of those old white guys you're talking about who tries to ignore aggressive behavior. I look straight ahead and go about my business. I try my damnedest not to further antagonize an obvious mental case. I am also one of those old white guys who has carried a concealed weapon all my life. I have never shot anybody. However, nobody has ever followed me to my destination and then threatened my life, either. I guess there is a first time for everything.

Ron, you said it sounded like I hate white people. Well, I hate some of them...but I admit this message was worded badly on my part. What I meant to ask was, why do older white males seem less apt to act on road rage than younger white men? Younger white men are more apt to play 'chicken' on the road with someone they feel cut them off or 'disrespected' them. In general, older white men seem non-confrontational (though I've seen exceptions). What is this, maturity? Fear? Being a young brown-skinned man, I have no idea.

Trying to take the high road in potentially dangerous road confrontations has nothing to do with race. But it is the sensible thing to do. Insofar as following a person who has cut you off, i'd advise against it...darn good way to get shot.

Subject: Blacks, Hispanics don't fear a fight will start
Reply: read original | add to Watch List | reply
I think blacks and Hispanics are more willing to get into a shouting match knowing or counting on it not escalating into a fight or a shooting - and it may also be more important to them to save some face by shouting back. Yes? No? I'd really like to know the answer to this. White folks may be thinking that the inevitable conclusion of any confrontation on the road between strangers is a wreck, a fight or death, so they avoid it.
