I'm from the generation where it was one of the "cool" words. I think it's just force of habit. I personally never use it, but then I wasn't one of the cool kids either.
I've also heard it used more ironically lately, so it seems to mean the opposite now, kind of like saying, "Oh, great" when something annoying happens.
I think slang is like fashion; it keeps changing, but many of us hold on to things from when we were growing up.
